Since hibiscuses (hibisci?) are such abundant flowers in Nicaragua, it is not surprising that the design should find its way into Nicaraguan ceramic art. Above is an absolutely exquisite ceramic bowl by Felipe Potosme Cana of San Juan de Oriente. He is a unique talent in the Nicaraguan ceramic art world, and the wide variety of forms and surface designs that he creates are testament to his imagination and creativity.
This bowl measures 12 3/4" X 4", and incorporates a simple palette of deep terra cotta red, black and fern green. Both the exterior and the interior are painted and incised with precision and careful craftsmanship. The depth of perspective in the flower and leaf presentation that the artist achieves is remarkable. It is signed by the artist on the bottom as a gallery quality collectible.
