Ben Linder

Ben Linder was an American who moved to Nicaragua in 1983 to use his skills as a mechanical engineer to help set up small, community-run hydro-electrical projects in villages in the northern area of Nicaragua. At this time, the US-funded Contras were operating in this area. Ben Linder was murdered by the Contras on April 28, 1987. He was the first American to be killed in the Sandinista-Contra War.

Ben was known for his unique ability to ride a unicycle. He loved to dress up as a clown and entertain Nicaraguan children wherever he went. The mural above is painted on the exterior wall of the Casa Ben Linder in Managua, which was founded in 1988 in his honor.
